Knot

I thought I'd revisit my "roots." When I was a young boy we would regularly visit churches. My father had a fascination with ecclesiastical architecture. I remember him giving tours of churches around London. I knew more about Christopher Wren than most contemporary cultural figures of the 1970's!

There wasn't much I didn't know about a flying buttress, I was familiar with a narthex and apses and whether it was Gothic or Romanesque and to be honest, as a 10 year old I hated it!

However, there was one thing that really did capture my interest, mostly found outside, in the graveyards, was the hypnotic knotwork carvings.

I started taking a sketch book with me & drawing all the complicated patterns I could find & I'm still doing that today!

For those who are not familiar with some of the meanings behind Celtic knots, briefly they revolve around metaphors about the continuity of life and nature, as well as the connectivity between the physical and spiritual world

This traditional shield knot example was often used for its ability to ward off evil & for protection.
